Low Coolant Level
If you are constantly adding coolant to the cooling system in the SUV, it’s possible that coolant is leaking through a crack in the head gasket. This is one of the things that the head gasket is designed to prevent. It is designed to keep the coolant and motor oil out of the combustion chamber. Unfortunately, when the head gasket cracks, it can no longer prevent the coolant from heading into the chamber.
Constant Overheating
Naturally, this is going to increase the heat of your SUV’s engine. You will notice that the engine runs hotter all the time. In fact, the engine may have been running hot before the head gasket cracked. This could be the reason why the head gasket blew. Nonetheless, if the engine does not have enough coolant in it for the water pump to circulate, it will overheat.
This is not the only reason why the engine is overheating. The head gasket also prevents the heat from the combustion chamber from rising into the engine. This heat is excessive, and it will increase your engine’s temperature to the scorching point. We recommend that you avoid driving your SUV when the engine is this hot. You run the risk of cracking the cylinder block if you drive it.
White Exhaust Smoke
Heat isn’t the only problem caused by a cracked head gasket. You will also see exhaust smoke flowing out of the tailpipe of your SUV. The exhaust smoke will be white. What this means is that the coolant is leaking into each of the cylinders and being burned during engine combustion.
Diluted Motor Oil
Finally, we also recommend that you avoid driving your SUV because the coolant will mix with the motor oil once the head gasket blows. Consequently, the oil will be diluted as it circulates through the engine. Naturally, it cannot protect the engine when it is diluted.
